The City of Lake Worth Beach invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Cemetery Sexton.

This Full-Time, Non-Exempt position is based on a 40-hour work week with an hourly rate of $24.87 - $33.33. This position is part of the Public Employees Union (PEU) collective bargaining agreement. The individual in this position will work out of the Public Works Grounds Office located at 1724 12th Ave South, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460.

JOB SUMMARY:

Work is performed under general supervision. Over sees, plans and participates in the daily operations, maintenance and upkeep of the City's two cemeteries and related facilities ensuring a safe, respectful and desirable environment for visitors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Schedules / supervises / performs cemetery maintenance activities, burial preparation / services, and other related tasks such as planting and trimming trees / hedges/ shrubs, grading and sodding around plots, seeding, watering, fertilizing, and mowing
  • Works a Tuesday through Saturday, 40-hour/ 5 days a week schedule with an ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance
  • Lays out burial plots according to maps
  • Performs administrative record keeping of lot sales, burials and grave locations
  • Performs minor monument maintenance, including leveling, straightening and raising headstones and grave markers as needed
  • Communicates with Funeral Directors or funeral home designees for service scheduling purposes, opening of graves, and making other funeral arrangements
  • Operates equipment for digging graves and lowering caskets when needed
  • Checks grave markers list and supervises the placing of markers and monuments
  • Handles complaints and grievances from the public

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of supervisory and administrative methods, procedures, principles, techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of clerical and financial recordkeeping in connection with cemetery business operations
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work and related equipment, tools, and machinery operation
  • Knowledge of State, County, and local laws and regulations pertaining to cemetery operations
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of cemetery maintenance personnel/ contractors
  • Ability to read and interpret cemetery map
  • Tact in dealing with the public
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, city officials, and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation
  • Ability to communicate effectively, written and oral

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED, an associate degree is preferred
  • 2-4 Years of experience in cemetery and grounds keeping work, including some supervisory or lead experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public, through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator and copier.
  • Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor outside, exposure to inclement weather.

CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES:

Possession of a valid, Florida driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

All full-time employees are considered critical in response to emergency situations and may be deemed essential as needed depending on the situation.

Employees in this position will be required to complete the FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) Certification Levels 100, 200, 700 and 800 within the first six months of employment. Certain positions may be required to attain additional ICS training as needed.
