AN INVITATION TO SERVE: FIREFIGHTER EMT
This isn't just another Firefighter EMT position. This is a call for professionals who want to build a department from the ground up. PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
This position is responsible for fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue, public education, and basic life support emergency medical services. The Firefighter/EMT will drive and operate emergency vehicles, use appropriate safety equipment under extremely hazardous conditions—including high heat, toxic gases, explosive chemicals, radioactive materials, and infectious diseases—and perform station and vehicle maintenance. Additional duties include conducting equipment and supply inventories, completing forms and reports, and entering data into computer systems. This position also requires maintaining the physical condition and skills necessary to maintain required certifications in fire suppression, fire prevention, and emergency medical response techniques for the duration of employment. This role is expected to complete all required continuing education in order to have all certifications remain active and in good standing. The Firefighter/EMT is required to work mandatory overtime and may be called back to duty in the event of a major emergency.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position but should not be considered exhaustive. Responds to fire alarms, initiates hose evolutions, secures water sources, and operates hose lines or master stream devices.
Locates and rescues victims in various emergency scenarios, including but not limited to burning buildings, waterways, and vehicular accidents.
Administers basic emergency care within the scope of their certification, evaluates patient status, formulates diagnoses, and implements treatment plans.
Completes medical equipment check-outs, inventories, and replenishments for both Fire and EMS apparatus.
Administers patient care within the scope of practice for the EMT skill level according to Florida State Statutes and department protocols.
Completes all documentation timely and completely, may review for quality assurance purposes.
Performs forcible entry, ventilation, and searches for hidden fires. Conducts salvage and overhaul to protect property from further damage. Participates in training sessions and post-emergency critiques.
Responds to hazardous material incidents and mitigates hazardous situations.
Inspects premises for fire hazards and code violations, conducts fire prevention patrols, and tests fire safety systems. Maintains fire-rescue equipment, apparatus, and facilities, performing minor repairs and cleaning.
Conducts public education programs on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics.
Participates in on-the-scene fighting of fires, ensuring adherence to department protocols and safety standards during active fire operations.
Actively engages in fire prevention activities, including fire hazard identification, public education, and risk reduction strategies.
Provides firefighter training, ensuring that all personnel receive up-to-date instruction in firefighting techniques, safety practices, and department protocols.
Maintains certification and complies with requirements outlined in s. 633.408.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Serves as a member of various Town of Jupiter employee committees, as assigned. Represents the Town of Jupiter at meetings, when requested.
Performs other related duties as required.
Represents both the Town of Jupiter and the Jupiter Fire and Rescue Department with integrity and demonstrates through actions a dedication to the Core Values of both.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent
Must possess a State of Florida Firefighter II certification in accordance with Florida Statute, Chapter 633 or currently enrolled. Must be state certified before June 1, 2026.
Must possess a State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification meeting all training requirements set forth by Florida Administrative Code 64J-1.020 or currently enrolled. Must be state certified before June 1, 2026.
Current American Heart Association (or equivalent) CPR certification.
A valid Florida driver’s license is required. For application purposes, a valid driver’s license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized, and the ability to obtain the State of Florida license within thirty (30) days from the date of employment is required.
The Drivers License in Good Standing must also meet the following Town of Jupiter standards and requirements:
•No more than 5 points accumulated on a license within the preceding 36 months
•No Suspensions or revocations in the 36 months preceding employment (Including administrative suspensions or failure to pay fines etc.
•No Reckless Driving Convictions within 36 months preceding employment
•No DUI / DWI Conviction in the 5 years preceding employment,
Must not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, perjury or giving a false statement.
Must not have a history of being terminated or involuntarily fired from an employer for dishonestly, untruthfulness or theft.
A personal and professional background that is free of conduct that would compromise the public trust.
Must not be on the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) Exclusion List.
Must meet all standards to successfully pass the comprehensive background check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated prior experience which denotes a Service to Others commitment. Examples include but are not limited to: prior military experience, prior experience in local government, ambulance service or other first responder capacities. Prior volunteer experience like disaster relief, community services, fire explorer/cadet program, or humanitarian aid also qualifies.
Training and experience in other categories of professional development are desired. Those can include disciplines within the fire service like fire investigation, risk reduction, hazardous materials, technical rescue, fire apparatus operation, marine/water rescue etc. Other experience in teaching or instructing, leadership development and supervisory best practices are also desired.
A 3.0 (B) or higher grade in both the Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighter Minimum Standards course.PERFORMANCE APTITUDES

Must have correct color vision and depth perception as noted in NFPA 1582. Must be able to lift and carry articles weighing up to 75 lbs. and push articles weighing up to 150 lbs. Must be able to wear hard hat/helmet, safety glasses, goggles, safety harness, respirator, safety shoes/boots, coveralls, gloves, bunker gear, and face shield. Exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Exposure to electricity, heights of up to 100 ft., noise, moving mechanical parts, confined spaces, vibration, radiation, dust, vapors, fumes, toxic metals, sensitizers, poisons, animals/insects, mist, gases, smoke, irritants, asphyxiates, and blood borne pathogens.
