POSITION: Aerothermal Engineer – Conversions

LOCATION: Jupiter, FL.

JOB SUMMARY

The Conversions Aerothermal Engineer is a key position that provides design, installation and operations leadership for gas turbine combustor and auxiliary upgrade projects. This position works alongside Conversions Team Project Leads and other disciplines to provide aerothermal outputs as needed to ensure installed systems meet performance requirements. Essential duties include 1D Flow modeling of combustion systems, pipe modeling and valve sizing in support of combustor sizing and developing GT auxiliary systems, performing CFD simulations of GT based solutions, and developing design standards and aerothermal technical data packages. The position requires remote and on-site commissioning support, and leading conversions projects. This role is a key contributor to the Service Engineering team, assisting, and leading commercial project execution to ensure excellent technical customer support. This position will coordinate with external customers, suppliers, digital products, combustion engineering, project leadership, tuning and controls, and field execution teams throughout project and product development lifecycles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead the design and development of the aerothermal aspects for commercial projects, including combustor sizing, 1D flow modeling and CFD analysis for recurring and first-of-a-kind GT auxiliary systems.
  • Utilize appropriate design/analysis tools, such as Performance Cycle decks, 1D Flow circuit programs, Heat Transfer, CAD, CFD, Python, to support aerothermal and performance related activities for commercial project-based requirements.
  • 1D flow and GT performance modelling in support Fuel skid and associated piping manifolds and fuel gas valve sizing and selection.
  • 1D flow and GT performance modelling in support gas turbine inlet and exhaust conditioning systems as well as piping manifolds and associated valve sizing and selection.
  • Develop, coordinate and present aerothermal content and documentation as required to support Installation Readiness Reviews and related presentations for internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Analyze and approve combustion component flow results and combustor assembly wheeling results to ensure they conform to requirements.
  • Lead assigned Conversion commercial projects.
  • Contribute to Service Engineering initiatives and activities in accordance with commercial project needs.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to gas turbine combustion and auxiliary systems during commissioning and post-outage.
  • Review field data from commercial installations and provide detailed analyses and recommendations on engine and system performance.
  • Define instrumentation plans in support of RCA and commercial program.
  • Interact frequently with internal and external customers to align on technical issues, present solutions and support the commercial installation of developed systems.
  • Provide technical support and cost estimates to the sales and tendering group for new proposals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education & Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerothermal Engineering or related field
  • Must complete EHS assigned regulatory training for work area as described by PSM’s EHS Training Matrix

Skills/Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in the following areas:
    • thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or combustion.
    • 1D/3D aerothermal modeling techniques
    • 3D CFD modeling turbulent/multiphase reactive flow.
    • Aerothermal design, analysis, and manufacturing of industrial/aircraft gas turbine engine components.
  • Experience working with lean, premix combustion system designs and the trade-offs between emissions and dynamics real world applications. Lean premix combustion tuning experience and Industrial Gas Turbine cycle knowledge a plus.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and organizational skills are required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable presenting technical concepts to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to perform hands-on fieldwork is strongly desired.
  • Demonstrated coaching and mentoring skills and consummate team player, with the ability to motivate and influence others.
  • Proven history of EHS leadership by example, including personal responsibility to prevent accidents, and reward and encourage proactive safety for teammates.
  • Must complete EHS assigned regulatory training for work area as described by PSM’s EHS Training Matrix.
  • Must be able to travel up to 25%, including intermittent international travel.
