Facilities Worker III/Switchman

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Facilities Worker III/Switchman supports the safe and efficient operation of Port rail systems, facilities, and infrastructure. This position is responsible for performing railcar switching between Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway and Port tracks, as well as skilled maintenance and repair of Port buildings, grounds, and related systems. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, technical proficiency, and the ability to work effectively in active rail and maritime environments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES – RAIL OPERATIONS
- Perform safe and efficient switching of railcars between FEC and Port tracks.
- Comply with all railroad operating rules, safety standards, and established procedures.
- Inspect and assist with maintenance of Port rail tracks and related infrastructure.
- Participate in locomotive operations training as assigned.
- Identify and report safety hazards, equipment deficiencies, and operational concerns.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES – FACILIITES & INFRASTURE MAINTENANCE
- Perform skilled maintenance and repair of Port buildings, grounds, and infrastructure.
- Complete work related to construction, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general facility systems (as qualified).
- Assist with rail track maintenance as directed.
- Operate trucks, tractors, mowers, and other motorized equipment safely and effectively.
- Perform landscaping and grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, planting, irrigation repair, and general upkeep.
- Utilize hand and power tools in accordance with occupational safety regulations.
- Perform general custodial and site upkeep duties as needed.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship, safety, and professionalism.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent certification.
- Minimum five (5) years of maintenance and repair experience (experience in construction, HVAC, electrical, or plumbing strongly preferred).
- Knowledge of railroad switching procedures and rail safety standards.
- Working knowledge of occupational safety rules related to hand and power tools.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment safely.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions, including standing for long periods of time.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Valid driver license required and must be maintained.
- Position is designated as safety-sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Employees working over or near water will be provided U.S. Coast Guard-approved flotation devices.
- To perform rail duties, the employee must successfully pass and maintain required hearing and vision examinations in accordance with applicable railroad safety standards.
- Ability to safely mount and dismount locomotives and rail equipment, including climbing vertical ladders and working on uneven surfaces such as ballast and rail yards.
- Must maintain a level of physical fitness sufficient to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position.
PHYSICAL & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Prolonged standing and walking required.
- Work performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Exposure to varying weather conditions, operational noise, heavy equipment, rail activity, and maritime environments typical of port facilities
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Works outside in various weather conditions including: noise, dust, chemicals, solvents, grease or oils, electrical energy, slippery surfaces.
