Job Description Summary:

Modernizing Medicine is seeking a Manager, Software Engineering who will be responsible for human resource management of Software Developers, as well as providing technical leadership and governance of development activities consistent with architectural and software development standards. This role contributes to the ongoing development of standards and processes to ensure quality. The ideal candidate will be expected to direct and collaborate with subordinates, providing and/or clarifying technical approaches, and assisting in the overall development of technical skills. This role contributes to defining architecture and technology, auditing development work, and overseeing the proper implementation thereof. The Software Engineering Manager will have broad experience in many aspects of software development, software quality approaches, and implementation frameworks. The successful candidate will have a passion for people, software development, quality, and the drive to accomplish their goals.

What you'll do

  • Partner with the Director of Software Engineering to deliver strong technical leadership, aligning architecture, engineering execution, and AI-driven innovation with business goals while fostering employee growth, engagement, and retention.

  • Drive the overall health of the engineering organization using data-informed insights, including team velocity, system reliability, developer productivity, and AI-assisted performance metrics.

  • Collaborate closely with architects and engineers to define scalable architecture, validate design decisions, and guide implementation strategies, incorporating AI/ML solutions where they add measurable value.

  • Work with product management and internal stakeholders to refine requirements, leveraging AI tools (e.g., predictive analytics, user behavior insights) to improve clarity, prioritization, and outcomes.

  • Own and manage the technical scope of the product roadmap, ensuring realistic planning, risk mitigation, and alignment with both business priorities and emerging AI capabilities.

  • Guide teams toward high-impact initiatives by balancing strategic priorities with data-driven decision-making, including AI-assisted prioritization and workload optimization.

  • Lead and evolve hiring strategies by integrating AI-powered sourcing, screening, and assessment tools to attract and retain top engineering talent.

  • Continuously identify and implement process improvements, including the adoption of AI-driven development tools (e.g., code generation, automated testing, intelligent CI/CD), to increase efficiency and quality.

  • Operates with a high degree of autonomy to define solutions, scope initiatives, and deliver on commitments, using modern documentation practices and AI-assisted knowledge management systems.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, QA, Support, and Product teams to proactively detect, diagnose, and resolve production issues, leveraging AI-based monitoring, anomaly detection, and incident response tools.


What you'll bring

  • 8+ years of experience managing engineering teams in a web-based application/service environment

  • Able to effectively direct and mentor others in engineering disciplines and best practices

  • 3+ years of experience with the Agile/Scrum development methodology

  • Minimum Bachelors in Computer Science or related field

  • Able to proactively engage with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and design solutions using critical thinking, analysis skills and best practices

  • Able to influence and energize others toward a common vision

  • Highly self-motivated and self-directed

  • Strong project management and product lifecycle skills

  • Able to understand the value of change and is willing to pivot direction to embrace different ways of working

  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment and leading subordinates

  • Understanding of object-oriented design, SQL and relational databases

  • Experience building scalable, globally accessible web applications and platforms

  • Understanding of application lifecycle management tools for source control, continuous integration and deployment, and various areas of testing (unit, integration, load, performance and vulnerability)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills, adaptable, proactive and willing to take ownership

  • Strong commitment to quality, architecture and maintainability
