Summary Objective

Under limited supervision, provides supervision of swimming and a variety of recreational activities at a municipal pool or recreational facility. Execute rescue procedures promptly and efficiently when necessary; and perform all related duties as assigned.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The job duties/responsibilities listed below are those that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Observes pool patrons and performs water rescues, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and first aid skills when necessary.
  • Warns bathers against dangerous practices; keeps non-swimmers and weak swimmers out of deep water.
  • Enforces rules and regulations regarding pool and locker room use in a tactful manner and maintains order in the pool area.
  • Keeps locker room and swimming areas clean and sanitary.
  • Conducts water games and sports.
  • May be required to collect and record pool admission fees, keep attendance records, activity records, maintenance and first aid reports.
  • Performs general pool and facility maintenance including brushing and vacuuming pool, pressure cleaning pool deck, sanitation to bathrooms and locker room facilities.
  • Assists in the preparation and operation of special events as directed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Completion of two (2) years of high school and at least sixteen (16) years of age. High school diploma or GED highly desirable.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training or equivalent.
CPR and First Aid certifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of pool rescue operations, protocols and rescue procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic life support procedures.
  • Knowledge of lifesaving and resuscitative techniques and procedures.
  • Skill in using tools to perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Skill in administering oxygen, performing CPR, first aid and using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Skill in talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, vendors, clients and the general public
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Duties:
The position performs work where the employee is frequently required to swim, sit, talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee must be able to stand or walk for extended periods. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities this job requires include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. May have exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, loud noise level, infectious diseases, and ultraviolet radiation.
