Summary:

The Director of AI Governance leads the development, implementation, and oversight of responsible AI practices across the organization. This role ensures that AI systems are ethical, transparent, compliant with relevant regulations, and aligned with the organization's values. The Director collaborates with cross-functional teams to embed governance into AI initiatives and mitigate associated risks.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Governance Framework Development:
    • Design and implement comprehensive AI governance frameworks, policies, and standards.
    • Establish review processes for AI systems to ensure fairness, accountability, and transparency.
  • Compliance and Risk Management:
    • Monitor AI models and applications for ethical compliance.
    • Conduct AI risk assessments and maintain AI inventories.
    • Ensure adherence to legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration:
    • Partner with legal, compliance, IT, and data teams to align governance strategies.
    • Liaise with external stakeholders, including regulators and clients, on AI governance matters.
  • Training and Culture Building:
    • Develop and deliver training programs on responsible AI practices.
    • Foster a culture of ethical AI use and continuous improvement.
  • Monitoring and Validation:
    • Implement mechanisms to monitor AI performance and ethical compliance.
    • Develop contingency plans for ethical failures or unintended consequences.
  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Advise senior leadership on AI governance trends and risks.
    • Lead change management initiatives to integrate responsible AI across business units.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Deep understanding of AI technologies, data governance, and ethical frameworks.
  • Strong leadership and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to navigate complex regulatory environments.
  • Experience in risk management and compliance.
  • Familiarity with AI validation and performance monitoring tools.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Law, Ethics, or related field.
  • Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s or PhD) preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in AI governance, compliance, or related roles.
  • Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams and governance initiatives.

Licensing and Certifications (Preferred but Not Always Required):

  • Certifications:
    • Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP).
    • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA).
    • AI Ethics or Responsible AI certifications (e.g., IEEE, ISO/IEC standards).
  • Licensing:
    • No specific licensing is universally required, but legal or compliance roles may benefit from bar admission or similar credentials, depending on jurisdiction.
